Can you imagine clients feeling debilitated by depression and anxiety even after taking their prescribed opiate replacement medication? Clients may suffer heightened anxiety with the thought of being fully abstinent from all drugs. A colleague once confessed he couldn't trust himself and would choose not to come into a large sum of money due to the temptation of buying illegal substances. Anxiety can build in a number of areas of taking, and not taking, illegal substances.  A common misperception paints a picture of a client feeling heightened anxiety only when locating and obtaining substances, yet anxiety can also be present throughout recovery.
